How to Choose: 3 Questions That Decide It

  1. 1What do you need to keep running?

Output in watts decides what you can plug in at once. Capacity in watt-hours decides how long it lasts. Phones, laptops, lights and a router are fine on 300 to 600 W. Fridges, kettles and power tools need far more, so check each device's label first.

  2. 2Camping trips or home backup?

For camping, weight matters most, so choose a small station. For outages, capacity matters more, because the fridge and router need to stay on for hours.

  3. 3How fast does it need to recharge?

After an outage or a day out, wall charging speed decides how soon the station is ready again. Check the AC charging time on the listing. The fastest stations here charge fully, or to 80%, in about an hour from the wall.

Before you order

  • Check the surge. Fridges, pumps and tools draw extra power for a moment at startup. Make sure the station's peak rating covers it.
  • Match panels to the input. If you buy a panel separately, check that its connector and voltage fit the station's solar input.
  • Keep it topped up. Recharge the station every few months in storage so it is ready when the next outage hits.

Power station FAQ

How big a power station do I need?

Add up the watts of everything you want to run at once for the output, then multiply by the hours you need for the capacity. Around 1,000 Wh covers a fridge and essentials for several hours. 300 Wh covers phones, laptops and lights.

Can I use one indoors during an outage?

Yes. Battery power stations produce no fumes, unlike fuel generators, so they are safe to run inside.

How long does solar charging take?

It depends on panel size and sunshine. As a rough guide, divide the capacity in watt-hours by the panel's watts and add about a third for losses and imperfect sun.

What is the difference between a power station and a solar generator?

A solar generator is a power station sold together with a solar panel. Any power station with a solar input becomes one when you add a compatible panel.

How long will the battery last?

Stations with LiFePO4 cells are rated for thousands of charge cycles, which is many years of regular use. Check the listing for the cell type and rated cycles.

How We Score Every Pick

Every power station gets one score out of 10, built from four criteria.

  • Core performance

How well it does its main job, judged on the specifications in each listing.

  • Ease of living with it

Setup, upkeep and how much attention it needs week to week.

  • Owner feedback

What buyers report after months of use, and how many of them there are.

  • Value

What you get for the price compared with the others on this page.
