How to Choose: 3 Questions That Decide It

  1. 1What does it need to clean?

Floor-only robots are cheaper and fine for flat, simple pools. If algae builds up on your walls or you get a scum line at the water's edge, choose a model that climbs walls and scrubs the waterline. Pools with tanning ledges or wide steps need a robot that handles platforms.

  2. 2How big is your pool?

Runtime decides whether one charge finishes the job. Small and mid-size pools are done well inside two hours. Large pools need a longer runtime, or you will be recharging halfway through.

  3. 3Is your debris on the floor or on the surface?

Robots that drive along the floor pick up what has already sunk. If your pool sits under trees, a surface skimmer catches leaves before they sink, and the floor robot has far less to do.

Before you order

  • Measure first. Check the robot's stated pool size against your pool's length and deepest point before ordering.
  • Check your pool surface. Vinyl, tile and plaster grip differently. Make sure the listing names your surface, especially for wall climbing.
  • Plan where it lives. Rinse the filter after each run and store the robot in the shade. Sun and chlorine age seals faster than use does.

Pool cleaner FAQ

Are robotic pool cleaners worth it?

If you clean your pool by hand every week, yes. A robot does the vacuuming and most of the scrubbing on its own, and it filters water independently of your pump, so the pump does not have to run longer.

Can I leave the robot in the pool?

It is better not to. Lift it out after each cycle, empty the filter and let it dry. Leaving it in chlorinated water shortens the life of the battery and seals.

Do cordless robots clean as well as corded ones?

For most home pools, yes. Corded robots can run indefinitely, but cordless models avoid tangled cables and now run long enough for a full cycle on a typical pool.

How often should I run it?

Two or three times a week in swimming season is typical. Run it more often after storms or when trees are dropping leaves.

Do I still need to brush the pool?

Much less. A wall-climbing robot handles most of it, but corners, steps and tight spots behind ladders still need a quick manual brush now and then.

How We Score Every Pick

Every pool cleaner gets one score out of 10, built from four criteria.

  • Core performance

How well it does its main job, judged on the specifications in each listing.

  • Ease of living with it

Setup, upkeep and how much attention it needs week to week.

  • Owner feedback

What buyers report after months of use, and how many of them there are.

  • Value

What you get for the price compared with the others on this page.
